What to expect from a weekend trip
Coming on a UBES weekend trip you should be prepared for one or two good days of mountain walking (though this is, of course, weather-dependent), and you should come ready to participate in lots of UBES organised fun! We focus our weekend trips on hiking, scrambling, climbing, and mountaineering in the UK’s beautiful mountainous regions.
Each day we split into smaller groups and offer a range of walks: from easier walking routes to challenging longer walks and even scrambling. We aim to have every walk led by a Mountain Leader trained member or an otherwise experienced mountaineer: so if you’re new to the mountains and navigation, you’re in safe hands. Anyone with a basic level of fitness, some simple walking kit and a sense of adventure is welcome!
Our weekend trips are often exhausting, but are a lot of fun and very sociable. They’re a great way to escape the city, enjoy new experiences, and meet a bunch of friendly new people – definitely worth the money!
Most of our trips are £50 for the weekend, which covers:
- Transport (via car or minibus)
- Accommodation (usually in a bunkhouse)
- Food: packed lunch for both days (sandwich, apple, chocolate, cake), Saturday dinner, Saturday and Sunday breakfast.
- Group Kit: maps, compasses, safety equipment, etc.
How do I sign up?
Sign up usually occurs two Wednesdays before a trip, at our ‘Info Point‘ outside the University Careers Service on Tyndall Avenue (see map below). You will need to bring cash or card (usually £50) to pay when you come to sign up, and your place is usually only reserved once you have paid. Some of our trips do ‘sell out’ due to high demand exceeding the capacity of accommodation, and places are then mostly allocated on a first-come-first-served basis – see the Join Us page for details of how our waiting list system works. See our Refund Policy for what happens if you ever need to drop out of a trip.
